Background of the Study:
In Nigeria, inheritance laws are often influenced by traditional practices, which can significantly affect the rights of women, especially in rural areas like Hadejia, Jigawa State. Despite legal frameworks that advocate for women's inheritance rights, such as the Nigerian Constitution and the Nigerian Land Use Act, many women in Hadejia still face discrimination when it comes to inheriting property. This is often due to deep-rooted cultural norms that favor men and restrict women's access to family wealth.
Women in Hadejia may be denied their inheritance rights due to customary practices that exclude them from property ownership, leaving them economically vulnerable and without legal recourse. This study aims to assess the extent to which women in Hadejia are able to access their inheritance rights, the challenges they face, and the role of legal and cultural norms in shaping inheritance practices.
Statement of the Problem:
Despite legal provisions that guarantee women’s inheritance rights, discriminatory cultural practices in Hadejia continue to limit women’s access to inheritance. These practices undermine women’s economic independence and perpetuate gender inequality. This study will assess the challenges women face in asserting their inheritance rights in Hadejia, Jigawa State.
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the level of awareness of women’s inheritance rights in Hadejia, Jigawa State.
To identify the cultural and legal barriers preventing women from accessing inheritance in Hadejia.
To recommend strategies for improving women’s inheritance rights and addressing gender inequality in inheritance practices in Hadejia.
Research Questions:
To what extent are women in Hadejia aware of their inheritance rights?
What are the cultural and legal barriers that prevent women in Hadejia from accessing their inheritance rights?
How can women’s inheritance rights be strengthened in Hadejia?
Research Hypotheses:
Women in Hadejia are not fully aware of their inheritance rights under the law.
Cultural and legal practices in Hadejia significantly hinder women’s access to inheritance.
Legal reforms and increased awareness can improve women’s inheritance rights in Hadejia.
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study will focus on women's inheritance rights in Hadejia, Jigawa State. Limitations include the potential reluctance of participants to disclose sensitive information due to cultural taboos and the limited enforcement of inheritance laws in rural areas.
